Supporting Mental Health in Our Community.
We are a community group passionate about improving mental health and wellbeing in Stansted and the surrounding villages. We have a team of ‘listeners’ who are ready and trained to offer a sympathetic and supportive ear to anyone who needs it, as well as a support team around those who are in need, or in danger from suicidal thoughts. We also run activity groups where people can meet, talk and share knowledge or skills in a safe space, free from judgement.

Or if you feel called to help those in need, we coordinate training programmes for mental health ‘first responders’ that will give you the knowledge and understanding to work with those who need mental health support – confidently and safely.

Our Story
Mental Health is a growing concern within the Stansted area. With several recent suicides and the unprecedented detrimental effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and rising cost of living, it is clear that more support is needed for those who are suffering with health concerns, financial worries, relationship pressures and work stress. A group of residents formed the Stansted Mental Health Initiative (Let’s Talk, Stansted!) in 2020 to highlight and work towards improving mental health throughout Stansted and the surrounding villages and invite you to support us in any way you can.
What We’re Doing
Our remit includes:
- Running as an open, not-for-profit community interest company to ensure our initiative is accountable to the community.
- Providing information services and ‘signposting’ – helping people contact the right experts to give them the support they need.
- Running meeting groups where people can meet and talk (and supporting existing groups in the area.)
- Training and supporting ‘mental health champions’ who can safely and confidently talk with anyone who needs help.
- Involving local businesses, organisations and community groups to raise awareness of mental health issues.
- Fundraising and attracting sponsors to pay for essential training and information services.
Answering Your Questions
Toggle each question to get more information.
What is your primary purpose?
To provide a local listening service for those who need to talk about the problems they face, so they feel loved and supported, and then help them get in touch with those who provide both professional support and a helping hand.
Who is running the initiative?
Let’s Talk, Stansted! is currently being set up by a steering committee made up of individuals from Stansted Mountfitchet and the surrounding villages. We come from a range of backgrounds, and we’re committing our time and effort as much as we can, BUT WE NEED MORE HELP IN OUR TEAM.
Are you affiliated with the NHS or any other organisations?
Let’s Talk, Stansted! is independent from national mental health services, the NHS or local councils. However, we are liaising with these organisations and others to ensure that the support we provide helps residents reach and receive the professional help they need.
How do people get in touch if they want to talk?
If you, or anyone you know, needs a listening ear, please ask them to email us at the present time (contact@stanstedmentalhealth.org) or say hello on our new Facebook Group (Let’s Talk, Stansted!). These are the only formal ways to reach us while we develop our team. WE HAVE INDIVIDUALS TRAINED IN MENTAL HEALTH & SUICIDE AWARENESS.
How do I donate?
We welcome all donations via our Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/stansted-mental-health
How can my business / company / employer get involved?
Local businesses can play a vital role in supporting us, through sponsorship, sharing leaflets and posters, or by offering spaces where those who need it can talk with trained listeners. Please get in touch.
Become a Volunteer Today
Please consider joining our team. There are several roles you could play – train as a mental health first aider (‘listener’), or help us with fundraising, logistics, accounting or publicity. Whatever your skills and availability, there’s a place for you in our team.
